About the Engagement
What does a fractional CMO actually do?
A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who works with your business part-time, at a fraction of the cost of a full-time hire. In practice, that means setting strategy, leading your marketing team, deciding what to focus on and what to stop doing, tracking the right metrics, and making sure things actually get implemented. The difference with this engagement: it's built on the Simplify the FunnelĀ® methodology - so the starting point is always to cut complexity before adding anything new.
How many hours a month does this involve?
That depends on the engagement. Most clients work with Ant for 2-4 days per month. We agree this upfront based on your team size, current marketing state, and what you're trying to achieve. Time is spent on strategy sessions, team oversight, content and campaign review, and staying close enough to the business to make good decisions fast.
How long is a typical engagement?
Minimum three months. Most clients stay for six to twelve months. The first 90 days are about simplification and building the foundation. After that, the work shifts to iterating, optimising, and compounding results. You can't genuinely transform a marketing function in a single sprint - but the first 90 days will show you whether it's working.
Do you work with a team or solo?
Both. If you have a marketing team, Ant leads them directly - setting direction, reviewing output, and making the strategic calls your team currently escalates to you. If you have no marketing team, Ant can help you identify what kind of support you actually need and work alongside any specialist freelancers or agencies you already use.
What's the client hub?
It's your dedicated workspace at hub.anthodges.com. From day one, you can see your 90-day Simplify Plan, your marketing dashboard, all session notes and agreed actions, and the resource library. It's the answer to the most common complaint about working with a fractional CMO: "I don't know what they're actually doing." In the hub, you always know.
How quickly do things start moving?
Fast. The first session is a funnel audit. By the end of week two, you have a 90-day plan. By the end of week three, things are already in motion. Fast implementation is a core principle - not an afterthought. The Simplify methodology is designed to remove the things that slow implementation down, so the work can move at the speed your business needs.
About Fit
My business is [X]. Is this relevant?
If you're a B2B company doing $5M-$50M in revenue, in professional services, consulting, expert-based businesses, or B2B SaaS, and you have a small marketing team with no strategic direction - this is for you. If you're pre-revenue, primarily e-commerce, or a consumer brand, it's probably not the right fit. If you're unsure, book a call and say so directly.
What if I've already tried a fractional CMO and it didn't work?
This is actually the most common background of new clients. The complaints are usually the same: invisible work, too many frameworks, slow to implement, no accountability, strategy documents that collected dust. The Simplify methodology and the client hub are both direct responses to those failures. The proof is in the process - start with the audit and you'll see the difference in week one.
Do I need to have a marketing team already?
No. Some clients have one or two marketing people. Some have none. What matters is that you have a business doing real revenue and a CEO who's ready to stop being the default head of marketing. The team question gets answered as part of the engagement.
About Cost
How much does it cost?
Engagements are structured as monthly retainers. The exact figure depends on scope, team size, and what you need. The discovery call is the right place to have that conversation - pricing is discussed after understanding your situation, not before. What you're getting is the equivalent of a $300,000-$400,000/year CMO, available to your business for a fraction of that.
Is there a contract?
Yes. A clear, plain-language agreement that covers scope, deliverables, and notice period. No hidden terms, no automatic renewals, no lock-in beyond the initial three-month period. If it's working, clients stay. If it's not, the terms make it straightforward to end.
Still have questions?
Book a call. Ask anything. If it's not the right fit, I'll tell you straight.
