What are affirmations and how can I use them in my life?

Affirmations are positive statements that, when read aloud over a series of days, can help you to overcome and eliminate self-sabotaging and negative thought patterns, including subconscious programming that holds you back without you realising it. When you repeat them often, and start to believe what you are speaking out, you can see a positive change.

This isn't just some kind of woo woo. The science behind it is as follows:

"At both the individual and collective levels, important domains of functioning—health, political decision-making, conflict, relationships, academic performance—call forth the motivation to defend the self. People defensively distort, deny, and misrepresent reality in a manner that protects self-integrity.
